Cell Phones at Camp

We recognize that there is a time and need for cell phones on the property (for staff) and that we continue to focus on safety for campers and staff as our number one priority.

Staff Usage

Staff may have their phones with them to make camp communication to operate summer camps, and for personal use.

  • Cell phones should not be used around campers unless it’s an emergency or taking photos. Policy 1.4.5 & 6.4.6
  • Personal Apps (Social Media Accounts, Games, etc.) should have notifications turned off during working hours.
  • Coordinators should download and use the Ooma Office App to make calls and texts through Covenant Bay’s office phone number.
  • All staff cell phones must have a locked or password-protected home screen.
  • Any photos taken of or with campers during a week of camp should be sent to the office for marketing and communications purposes. Send to jon@covenantbay.ca
  • No photos of campers should be directly posted to any staff member’s social media.
  • Visual recording equipment (including cell phones) is NOT permitted in areas where individuals may not be fully clothed.
  • Staff taking campers off-site (Provincial Park, Hospital) must bring and maintain cell phone communication.
  • The leadership team will address staff if cell phone use becomes problematic or distracting.

Camper Usage

  • Campers should leave cell phones at home unless a parent or guardian has gained permission from the Executive Director.
  • Campers who bring a cell phone will be asked to leave it in the camp office in the cell phone box.
  • No child will be denied access to their phone within a reasonable time. A reasonable amount of time takes into consideration the urgency and importance of the reason for use.
  • If a child does not have a cell phone and wants to contact home, we will always allow them to do so from our office phone or one of the leaders’ cell phones.
  • We recognize the ever-changing nature of technology and its impact on children. We want to remain a safe space mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Removing some of the trigger points, temptations, and unknowns that come with technology can help us do this.
  • Please inquire with a program leader if you have further questions.
